Bio

Name: John House

Canon Source: House (TV show)

Point of Entrance: second half of season 2

Appearance: John is a broad-shouldered, stocky man in his late 60's/early 70's. He has dark blue eyes and dark, graying hair cut short, Marine-style. He also has Marine tattoos on both arms.

History:

The canonical facts
"He was a marine pilot. She was a housewife. Married 47 years. They had one child." (House; "Daddy's Boy") When Greg House was fourteen, the family was in Japan ("Son of a Coma Guy"). At some point before that, they were in Egypt ("Clueless"). John House psychologically and physically abused his son, by making him sleep outside and take ice-baths ("One Day, One Room").

My personal biography for him
John House was born in Ohio in 1935 to a large family with a strong military tradition. His father was a marine, as were two of his brothers. When John was still a boy, his father died in World War II, at Iwo Jima, leaving John to become the man of the house. John wanted nothing more than to continue the tradition and live up to the examples set by his father and grandfather. He attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, graduating in 1957. That year, he married a young woman named Blythe and the two moved to Pensacola, Florida where John completed his training as as a pilot. Over the years, he was stationed in various locations around the world; he also fought in Vietnam.

In 1959, John and Blythe had one son, whom they named Gregory. Both John and Blythe were from large families and planned to have many children, but unfortunately, Blythe had a very difficult time giving birth to Gregory and having more children became an impossibility. As it turned out, they had their hands full raising Greg anyway.

John has been baffled by his son since the boy was two years old. Bemused by his son's idiosyncrasies and irreverence, John responded by overcompensating with extremely harsh discipline: monitoring his activities, enforcing corporal punishment, and sometimes making him sleep in the yard or take baths in ice. John hoped that he could steer Greg in the right direction and turn him into the kind of man he thought he should be, a man like the rest of his family: strong, fearless, respectful, honorable. He dearly hoped that Greg would become a marine, but was disappointed when Greg chose instead to become a doctor. Eventually, however, he accepted his son's decision and was proud at least to know that his son was highly respected in his profession. The two remained estranged through Greg's adulthood, however, and their relationship continues to be one of the few regrets in John's life. This is mostly because he is aware that it is a cause of pain to his wife, Blythe, for they do not very often visit with their son or even hear from him. He maintains however that his treatment was never out of line and that Greg's unhappiness and unwillingness to meet him halfway is his own fault.

John House recently retired from the marines and lives together with his wife in Florida. After so many years of traveling from base to base, they are glad to be settled in retirement at last, although they do still travel from time to time, but now John is able to sightsee, as he never could before.

Personality: "My dad's just like you [Cameron]. Not the caring-till-your-eyes-pop-out part. Just the Insane Moral Compass that won't let you lie to anyone about anything. Great quality for boy scouts and police witnesses. Crappy quality for a dad." (House; Daddy's Boy)

"He liked things the way he liked them. He believed in discipline." (House; One Day, One Room)

John House can appear to others to be stern, rigid, blunt, and gruff. This seemingly cold exterior is a result of John's view that he is simply not allowed to show weakness; he believes in strength, self-reliance and perseverance. He applies this same standard to everyone else, believing that anyone who acts differently is a coward or weakling -- except, perhaps, for women. His attitude toward women is rather old-fashioned, with a chivalrous need to protect and shelter them. His sense of morality is similarly rooted in tradition; he believes in universal ideals and is unwilling to bend for anyone. In John's mind, everyone should always tell the truth in every situation. He sees things in black and white, maintaining that there are cold, hard facts in life which cannot be ignored. John values justice over mercy and believes in enforcing rules and keeping order with strict discipline. He is not without gentler qualities, however, and in certain moods can be sweet and playful. He also puts great emphasis on things such as manners, punctuality, and appearance, all of which he considers a sign of respect and consideration for others. He enjoys sports and beer and chatting with friends. He is straight-forward and to-the-point, principled and confident. In short, John House is a tough guy - a man's man - as well as a gentleman.
